Australia's sugar production is expected to total 4.4 million tonnes in 2023/24, up from 4.2 million the previous season, the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) agricultural attaché in Canberra said.

According to the attaché, the expected increase is due to an expectation of growth in sugarcane milling to 33.5 million tons, from 32.6 million in 2022/23. This increase in expected sugarcane production is explained by an estimated increase in productivity after very good weather conditions for the development of the sugarcane crop.

The Oceanian country's sugar exports are expected to reach 3.6 million tonnes in 2023/24, up from 3.270 million the previous year. Domestic sugar consumption is expected to increase from 850,000 to 900,000 tons.
