UN opens storage facility in Pakistan

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government Food Department (KPK) inaugurated a 3,000-ton model wheat storage facility in Malakand, a province of Pakistan, on Feb. 9. "This facility will function as a model with its enhanced design and test facility that we hope to replicate in other areas of KPK, given the need to expand storage facilities in the province," said the Additional Secretary of the Food Department.
The storage facility was built by PAM and includes a training facility, office area and wheat test lab. WFP said the facility will help the Food Department balance wheat flour supply and demand to protect the interests of producers and consumers. In addition, the training center will help empower Food Department employees and other partners in wheat storage management areas.
"WFP is committed to helping strengthen food systems in Pakistan," said Chris Kaye, WFP's director in the country. "During the recent floods, it was painfully obvious that much needs to be done to help protect and manage one of Pakistan's most precious commodities – wheat. Improved storage capacity is a prerequisite and a systems approach can help bring benefits to farmers and consumers." The construction of the wheat storage facility is part of the implementation of the new Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2023–2027 of WFP Pakistan.
