Hurricane passage leaves citrus growers on alert
segunda-feira, outubro 03, 2022
Florida's citrus, greatly weakened by the impacts of greening, is being threatened by hurricane "Ian" through the U.S. state. According to the National Hurricane Center, the phenomenon hit the soil of Florida on Wednesday, 28, being, at that time, classified as category four, but now has decreased the intensity, and began to be considered as a tropical storm.
According to data from the Cepea newsletter, this storm should still be one of the strongest to hit the state. Floods of different intensities may occur, especially in central Florida, in addition to strong winds, conditions that can bring damage to local citrus.
Cepea researchers indicate that flooding results in plant rot, and winds tend to bring down fruits, leaves and even entire trees, as occurred in 2017 with the passage of Hurricane Irma. It is worth remembering that the harvest of the current 2022/23 Florida crop is close to being started, with activities scheduled for mid-October.
