Vietnam announced this month that it has developed the world's first vaccine against African swine fever (PSA). The immunizer was reportedly created in partnership with researchers from the United States, and should initially be available initially only in the Vietnamese market.
The goal is also to produce the vaccine for markets where the disease has caused major disorders, such as in Asian countries. According to international news agencies, the vaccine provides immunity to pigs for six months.
The disease is deadly to pigs and has devastated creations in various parts of the planet. It is a serious viral infection that has been observed since the beginning of the last century in areas of Africa. In the 21st century, it spread across Eurasia, reaching Europe in 2014 and China in 2018. In the Asian country, PSA practically decimated the swine herd. In 2021, after the first focus ever recorded in the Americas – more precisely, in the Dominican Republic -, the entire continent went on alert and strengthened biosecurity procedures.
African swine fever affects wild and domestic pigs and is generally fatal to animals, but harmless to humans. Moreover, the consumption of possibly contaminated meat does not present risks to human health either.
