Foreign Minister Carlos França today (18) criticized the economic sanctions imposed on Russia due to the conflict with Ukraine. According to the chancellor, the Brazilian government's position is that unilateral sanctions aggravate the economic effects of the conflict and affect developing countries, dependent on food imports and other basic insum.
"The sanctions imposed aggravate the economic effects of the conflict and have an increasingly evident impact on the supply chains of essential products. The sanctions imposed seek to preserve the immediate interests of a small group of countries, while harming the vast majority of the international community, especially in the developing world," France said during a hearing at the House foreign relations committee to discuss the portfolio's actions.
According to the minister, the sanctions affect the ability of several countries to acquire supplies and products needed for food security on the international market. France also said that many developing countries have implemented measures in parallel to block exports of products for fear of undersupply of domestic markets. For him, this has generated uncertainties, such as Brazil's difficulty in importing fertilizers, for example.
"Across all continents we see countries mainly and development and some very poor suffer increasing difficulties, not only from importing essential food, but also from the export of products in which they are competitive, all due to the restrictions that are in force today in the international payment system, due to sanctions," France said. "Our priority is to ensure the continuous supply of fertilizers to our agricultural production," he added.
