During a visit to Jordan, Agriculture Minister Marcos Montes announced that the Jordanian company Arab Potash Company will expand the export of potassium to Brazil and open an office in the country. The company is the eighth largest producer of ore in the world by volume. Brazil has been trying to diversify fertilizer imports to protect against supply risks as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war. Russia is the origin of 28.2% of Brazilian imports of potassium chloride (KCL), according to a survey by the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) from comexstat data.
"This coming year, we will be receiving around 500,000 tons of potassium. And who knows, within a very short space, in two, three years, we will receive 1.2 million tons from the hands of this company that has an impressive quality", said the Minister of Agriculture, in a video passed by the agency. "And the most important thing is that we received the news, after our visit here, that the company will open an office in Brazil for the negotiations to be closer."
The president of the Arab Potash Company, Maen Nsour, said the minister's visit is indicative of the construction of a long-term strategic relationship between Brazil and the company. In the executive's estimate, however, the company will send close to 320,000 tons of red granulated potassium to Brazil this year and increase this volume to about 500,000 tons in two years.
According to Nsour, Arab Potash is investing in projects to expand production and has "big plans" for Brazil. "The Brazilian market is very important, not only because we want to increase the level of Jordanian exports to it, but because we realize the importance that Brazil plays in the food security of humanity," he said. He said that "very soon" the company will have permanent office in Brazil to strengthen contact with Brazilian importers in order to meet the requirements of volume, quality and distribution in Brazil.
