Biden says G7 will discuss lowering food and fertilizer prices
quinta-feira, maio 12, 2022
U.S. President Joe Biden said Wednesday that U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will go to Germany, the country that leads the G7 in 2022, to discuss agricultural issues with European allies.
In a speech aimed at the country's farmers, the Democrat said actions to increase the supply of global fertilizers will be discussed, as well as the search for ways to avoid export restrictions on food and agricultural insum.
According to Biden, the measures will stabilize prices and bring more security to farmers, and prevent people from starving to death.
"Farmers are concerned about rising fertilizer costs and what the content is. That's why, earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that it would invest $250 million to increase fertilizer production," Biden said. After that, the Democrat asked for the amount to be doubled, in a sum of $500 million.
Right now, the U.S. is fighting on two fronts, according to the president.
"At home, it's inflation and rising prices. Abroad, they are helping Ukrainians defend their democracy and feeding those who are starving around the world because there are Russian atrocities," the president concluded.
